Why do people remove the UPC stickers for software they sell on EBAY?

I want Nortons anti-virus, and looking on ebay, but they all say "UPC stickers(codes) on box are carefully removed".

Why do they do that.

Thanks guys.

this is most likely to provide proof of payment in future disputes, or for mail in rebates that the seller has when purchasing the products

see, if the sellers get a dispute from a buyer, saying that they did not receive their item. they have to provide proof to eBay or Paypal, the UPC of the item could be one of these proofs.

However, I think it's because of the mail in rebate.

If you do not know what a rebate is, here's a brief description.

It's basically a discount from the manufacturer of the product. All you have to do is follow some instructions provided, mail your receipt along with the UPC of the product and then the company will mail you a cheque, usually this amount varies from $10 to $100 or more.
