I use nod32 and Spybot seach %26 destroy on my computer. Both can be downloaded for free. If you want you can buy other good anti virus and anti spyware/addware anti everything like zonealarm.
they are different, but if you dont download dodgey stuff and have half a brain you dont need antivirus. spyware however will come no matter what but theres ways to prevent it like not using internet explorer (use firefox) etc. you should scan for spyware every so often

and anything norton is crap
Norton Internet Security is the best proprietary software
spybot search and destroy is a great FREE virus scanner!
It depends on your computer and the configuration of your OS. Norton trashed my mom's system.
