The PC shuts down randomly after working for 1 to 4 hrs. Once shutdown, I can not boot for next 15 mins. or so. Moreover, if I run any imaging software (Norton Ghost, Acronis Disk Manager) or Spyware detector (Spybot/Adaware) or even Norton Anti-virus, PC shuts down within next 10 mins.
One year old P4 with WinXP keeps itself shutting down randomly.?noton
It sounds like it could be an overheating issue; power supply going out; a memory problem, even dirt.
I would suggest you try the following:
1. Remove your case and vacuum, or blow out, any dust. Especially clean the fan fins and remove your memory and clean the slots out. Make sure you unplug your computer and that you touch a piece of metal first to remove any static electricity in your body.
2. Insert back your memory and turn your computer on. Make sure that all fans are turning. If just 1 fan is not turning that could lead to overheating or telling your motherboard to shut down.
3. Take a close look at your CPU heatsink and fan and any chassis fan including your power supply and make sure they don't feel over heated. Also touch your hard drive and see if that is overheated too. You can purchase hard drive cooling fans for less then $10.00 and they cool down your drives considerably. Easy to install too.
If you need to replace your cpu fan, make sure you throughly clean the thermal paste off your heatsink before applying more thermal paste. I highly recommend "Artic Clean Thermal Material Remover" and "Artic Clean Thermal Surface Purifier." They cost less then USD $10.00 or so. Don't go cheap on a great cpu fan!
