Is a key generator software really a threat?

I just scanned a file (with an anti-virus) that contains a key generator for a program that I downloaded. The scan result says there's a threat detected. The person which I downloaded the file from says it is the key gen being detected although it is really not a threat. Is this true? Details and rationale please.

a key generator software is usually a threat, because at the same time it can be malware, or trojan.

in you case it is threat, to your system

crap Y computer/internet section became kids playground
The real threat is you illegally downloading software. It makes the rest of us pay more for software and games.
I agree with the guy who said it increases the price of software piracy just makes software vendors throw bigger locks on their product I'll give you an example I bought Chessmaster 9000 for the Mac I can't make a backup copy I have to insert the dvd every time I want to play it because Feral Interactive is paranoid People are going to pirate it :(

If the DVD gets damaged I'm out $55 dollars
If you suspect a false positive from your antivirus software, you should email the file with the question to the appropriate support email address. With leading commercial antivirus software it's unlikely that the alert is false, though
It is a threat to the person or corporation that you are stealing the program from!
This is often a problem with pirate software, you can not be sure. Personally I would not publicly announce I was using illegal software on here, if the regulators see it you could be in trouble.
yes, and it is illegal. Watch this Vid. It'll help. :)
