I get a system alert that is a pitch to buy software. how do I remove it?

The message shows up in the bar on the bottom of my screen it sais things like Security-Alert: Spyware found. Click this baloon to remove PSW, x-vir spyware. When I click on the button its an add for an anti virus or anti spy ware program. Some have been called spy crusher, viruslocker, etc. I have run my virsu scan software (macafee) and two spw ware removal programs (ad-aware, and yahoo anti-spy). Does anyone know what I should do now?
