well i would have to say anti virus but lately firewalls has been more necessary because of botnets

you should also add an antispyware program

like AVG antispyware

i used to use Superantispyware but AVG just feels more safe so your choice

there is also a free utility that the creators of ccleaner have created called defraggler

it is pretty much a disk defragment tool that just works better

ahh, the end all question. I love hitman pro, it gets a lot of spyware out. Spyware causes slow computers, viruses, ads and popups. Hitman pro uses a lot off different spyware removal services. Now with an anti-virus, most that you pay for aren't really that great. If you are going to pay for one, go with MS live one care. With Norton and mcafee, they let a lot of things in without detecting them. I preferably use avast anti-virus, avg is also another nice one. When people have viruses, and have mcafee and norton running on their system, the two antivirus programs, avg and avast detects a lot that mcafee and norton missed. Only use one anti-virus, if more than one is used they cancel themselves out (and yes i have seen this done), or people don't realize to take their old one out before placing a new one in. To get a good online scan trend micro is really convenient, once you get serious virus and spyware infections it is really hard to fix your system (without doing a full system restore/format/recovery), it compromises security as well. When you remove these items it leaves wholes in your operation system, and it can be unusable or unstable.

so always have a good spyware and antivirus removal plan. sypsweeper is a good for running all the time for spyware.
