My computer, when restarted, freezes up about 98 percent of the time. I do not have a virus or any spyware. This doesn't happen if the computer is turned off and then back on again, only when it restarts after installing programs or updating software like my anti-virus. Any ideas what causes this? I did a repair install of Windows XP the other day thinking that could be the reason, but it still happens. Any input would be appreciated.

The cause is too much program running at startup, you can stop that by doing this
1. on the start menu click run
2. Type "msconfig" without the quote and press enter

It may be a na-a-a-a-a-a-asty virus.
well, it could be a hardware issue. i suggest a complete reformat and reinstall of your operating system.
Thats a good question. I think your problem is hardware/OS related. Baiscly something is causing your OS to freeze when it is executing something that the hardware doesn't agree on. This could be a result of a setting in Winodows or some kind of program you installed.
Only advice I can give is reinstall Windows from scratch. Then make sure you go to Windows Update via Tools in Internet Explorer. Sometimes they release patches for known Issues like yours.
It's probably failing it's POST sequence (Power On Self Test) which is where the motherboard scans the available IDE channels for hard drives, CD/DVD roms etc. I've had a few motherboards that do this and it's a right pain. They nearly always seem to do it on restart yet if you turn off and then on it will be fine. It's normally down to a dodgy IDE controller on the motherboard which unfortunately cannot - to my knowledge - be fixed.
Probably better to replace the motherboard. Sorry if this isn't news you wanted to hear, but I've suffered the POST blues myself and there isn't much that can be done other than to remove the device the board is having trouble detecting.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
