My hard drive only runs in safe mode?

I have hard which was previously running as a master drive. I hooked it up as a slave and now I can only read it in safe mode. When I try to format the slave drive from Disk Management it goes upto 99% and then say 'hard was not formatted' I can't access in normal mode. I keep getting errors. I disabled all background software....even anti-virus. Nothing doing.

My OS is windows XP. P4. Can someone help me. I want to know why this is happening. If any more information about my computer is needed let me know.

I believe you need some kind of software to set up the second drive as a slave drive. It needs to be partitioned and then formated and this software usually comes with boxed hard drives or you can buy the software separately. I don't know any by brand names but many different ones are at your local software supplier. If you want to keep the data on your old drive then I suggest either copying the data to your new drive before you partition the old drive or buying an external USB harddrive enclosure and using an external USB port.

You probably have stuff installed that you don't know about. Call your friendly tech support people and ask them to go through with on when you have msconfig open (that's a program that lets you turn off startup stuff, and if you're not comfortable in screwing with windows, don't use it yourself).

I've managed to get to the Full Recovery screen that says I can reformat my hard disk, install Windows XP, device drivers, and preinstalled applications.

Will this even help? Im 90% sure the viruses are in Internet Explorer because when I opened it up my anti-spyware software was blocking repeated attempts to install .exe applications from different servers - this happened so quickly that I couldn't run a quick check on my computer and then when I restarted it said there was a fatal error and it must restart.

Im concerned that the virus or worms will still be in there, but who knows - I know I dont.

When you reinstall Windows, it will wipe everything off your hard disk and start over. I'm thinking that the chances of it staying are next to nothing. A reformat is the best way to get rid of a virus; unfortunately, it is the most time-consuming.

For the past 3 reformats I've had to do, all 3 have been due to a specific problem, at some point, my video files become currptoed, they will open and play in a media player, but for SOME reason they will be cut horribly short, from about 15 minutes down to 30-40 seconds, this seems to happen after a period of time, anti-viral software as well as anti-spyware software cant seem to pick up whatever this is. None of the anti spyware softwares are seeming capable of destroying spywares, but rather they can only provide protectioin against them...

I am frustrated because I tried Nortan internet security, Norton anti-spyware, as well as spy sweeper, but none of it seem to be able to remove the real threats. I mean they did remove a bit.

I've tried both AVG and ClamWin, and I still have the same problems with my computer as I did before. The problem is that after a few hours, my desktop will sometimes freeze up (if the screensaver is on, when I get back to my computer the only thing you can see is the desktop wallpaper). Like you said - it isn't due to a virus. Some motherboards have major problems "waking up" after Windows goes into hibernation. The best way to fix this is to go into your Windows control panel and (from Classic view in XP/Vista) choose Power Options, and select your power theme as "Always On". This will cause your motherboard to not hibernate and therefore it will stop freezing on wake. If it still persists, go into Display and disable your screen saver and that should do it. (Just turn off your monitor when it's not in use if you want to save power.) Burn-in takes weeks to happen on newer monitors so there's no risk by disabling screensavers.

As for anti-virus and anti-spyware software, my personal recommendation is TrendMicro. It's both anti-virus and anti-spyware and uses much less resources than McAfee and Norton do.

Computer Spyware or Virus?

I have scanned my computer with AVG anti-spyware and Norton and they both didnt show anything wrong. On the bottom left hand corner of the computer (i forgot what the area is called) there is a red x and then it changes to a blue question mark. I just went to the main page on Download. On the right hand side on the top, most popular down loads is AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. Not sure where you are down loading from-try if from there. You should be able to do it. Your file cannot be corrupted. Try loading software one at a time. Rebooting each time. I have MS Vista, got a similar msg. It just ran through and loaded it sucessfully. Why has my computer slowed down of late?

I have anti virus Mc Af ee se cur ity su ite which won't work anymore. (I have to type some words like that or I won't be able to come back to this page). I have IE 7, which I ripped and reinstalled earlier. I did the same with YM, and I tried to rip the anti virus program, but I can't (from control panel). I tried searching for the name of virus that does these things, but when I try to open a page on removing it, the browser shuts down and disappears. Same thing happens with IE, Netscape, and Firefox (tried them all today). I can't even scan online. I tried to get to the home page of my anti virus, but the browser closes out. I got my task manager back by disabling the reg key that blocked it. What is the name of the virus, and please type it carefully or I won't be able to come back to this page. You have a spyware keylogger (it's certainly watching what you're typing on the keyboard). Unfortunately, there's no way of telling what its name is.

I suggest you download Ad----Aware SE and Spybot S%26%26%26%26D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If either of them or mac af ee doesn鈥檛 seem to be able to get rid of everything it reports finding, try running it again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.

4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. Log in as Administrator. Administrator often has no password.

5.When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run them all regularly.

Yeah there is a virus in it. Limewire program searches are infected with all kinds of viruses.
Whatever files (zip %26 exe) you download from the net, whether by limewire or any other software you should before run it, scan it, cuz you don't know the source of that file and it's safer to scan it first with an updated antivirus software.

I always recommend against Norton, it is a very bloated piece of software, and it basically takes over your computer's resources. AVG is a great antivirus program...plus, it's FREE! If you want a firewall, use ZoneAlarm...it's FREE too!

i currently run windows XP Service Pack 2, and i have webroot spy sweeper with anti-virus. I update my definitions daily, and i have other programs that clean my registry, and i run that about every once a week. my hard drive is defragged in real time, using Ashampoo's product magical defrag II. I learned recently that my windows firewall is good, but not great. There are a lot of issues with using a program to try and clean your registry. Make sure it doesnt delete anything from the HKEY LOCAL Software Windows NT folder. You dont want to mess up anything that will screw up your Windows.

If there is a program that you dont recognize that shows up on the ccleaner software, then its safe to delete it.

I think there are better programs out there that will tell you which registry cleanups are risky and which is safe to delete. You should make sure ccleaner has the ability to distinguish between risky registry deletes and the ones that are safe to delete.

It can be set to automatically receive updates every 4 hours, but is that really necessary? It must be there.Was it a trial version?(ye know for limited period).Or else get prepared to change yer hard disk,cause a few months back a problem akin to yours i.e; my entire OS disappeared.Repeated formating etc did not help.I was informed that ,the problem was relating to "disk manager utility" and finally I had to replace a new drive.
I would just download Avast AntiVirus. It's free, and less obtrusive than Norton. I've had no problems using it.

Don't run anything as root, or use sudo.

Step 2:

Download only trusted updates, signed with the PGP keys.

Use a decent firewall setup like so:

Anti-virus software is notorious for fighting. I've not ever seen two anti-virus programs installed that didn't cause at least a few annoyances. Anti-spyware stuff is usually better behaved, but not always. Firewalls shouldn't really *fight* that much, but will require you to open a hole in both places whenever you want to open something up, and won't really protect you that much more.

The short answer: One anti-virus, one firewall, and a few anti-spyware apps should be just fine.

First try running your security products such as antivirus and antispyware applications in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode, reboot and then either hold down or tap the F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up. ahh, the end all question. I love hitman pro, it gets a lot of spyware out. Spyware causes slow computers, viruses, ads and popups. Hitman pro uses a lot off different spyware removal services. Now with an anti-virus, most that you pay for aren't really that great. If you are going to pay for one, go with MS live one care. With Norton and mcafee, they let a lot of things in without detecting them. I preferably use avast anti-virus, avg is also another nice one. When people have viruses, and have mcafee and norton running on their system, the two antivirus programs, avg and avast detects a lot that mcafee and norton missed. Only use one anti-virus, if more than one is used they cancel themselves out (and yes i have seen this done), or people don't realize to take their old one out before placing a new one in. To get a good online scan trend micro is really convenient, once you get serious virus and spyware infections it is really hard to fix your system (without doing a full system restore/format/recovery), it compromises security as well. When you remove these items it leaves wholes in your operation system, and it can be unusable or unstable.

so always have a good spyware and antivirus removal plan. sypsweeper is a good for running all the time for spyware.

I would go with AVG Free Edition. It Rocks! free.grisoft.com. They even have a linux and windows vista version. Heavily commercial antivirus programs such as Norton and McAffee are too easily targeted by virus creators because everyone uses them.
Neither ones. The best paid antivirus is Kaspersky or Bit Defender. The best Free antivirus is Avira Antivir PE not avg like most people thought.

I need some extra cash so I'm considering building PCs for local clients.

I already have most of it planned out:

For the price of about $1000, I could build a sleek-looking machine with a Wolfdale Core 2 Duo, plenty of RAM %26 HDD space, DVD Burner, XP Pro, and a nVidia or AMD graphics card that would dominate in Crysis -- while making a $150-300 profit.

I would advertise only locally, using mainly Craigslist.

I would also include Anti-virus, anti-spyware, productivity software, and configure XP to minimize resource usage. I would deliver the PC to the client's door and maybe even help them set it up.

I would make it clear that I can only provide warranty service on parts, not if they load their PC with spyware.

The only speed bump I've run into is how to accept payment. I would require it upfront to pay for the parts, but how in the world am I going to convince anyone to trust me with their money, given the fact that they won't get their new PC for 1-2 weeks? Any suggestions?

You may be able to set up an account with an online dealer such as Tech Data, Newegg or TigerDirect. If you can set up such an account, then your purchase terms (Net 30, Net 15, etc) would allow you to order the parts, assemble your machine and sell to your client. The norton anti-virus was pre-installed on this computer. The computer usage it's at 0% after it's done booting up and it's a norton internet security 2006 and you know what. Time your most used applications response times.

Disable norton and use msconfig to trim your startups right down. Also go through your taskbar and kill anything you don't need so it doesn't start when windows starts. Check your system startup folder too.

Reboot and repeat the test.

Yes you can un-install at any time, you don't have to wait until it expires if you want to. If you want to eliminate some entries that might be in your system then use a registry cleaner like Tune Up Utilities (30 days free trial).

The only security program you need to run if you are smart about what you click on and use a router (all routers these days are also firewalls) is a software firewall, to block random attacks and outbound connections. A VERY good free firewall is ZoneAlarm free edition (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/c... , click the link on the right), although some people prefer Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ).

If you feel that you still need to run Anti-Spyware, SuperAntiSpyware combines removal lists from many other free AV programs and I have found it to be the best. One more thing you can do is remove startup items by typing 'msconfig' into the run command on the start menu. Uncheck unneeded startup items.

well that first one sounds way better. I'd be surprised if that 20 gb hard drive is still anywhere near it's life expectancy, my 160 gb drive failed 2 years ago. and you'll use up 20 gb pretty fast. get the better one, and still buy a backup hard drive for your data, it still has the software, which is very good.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer, BEFORE you see the Windows picture, hit F8. Hit it multiple times if need be. Once a menu pops up, use your arrow keys to select 'Safe Mode'

Yes, it's going to look different. Don't worry about that. Then do a search for those three files and you'll be able to remove them.

Then restart again and it should go into normal mode and you won't see those three files again.

Get rid of it, Download AVG or Avast antivirus program which are both free, once downloaded and installed on your computer, check for updates do a full system scan. restart your computer and install Spybot Search and Destroy, which again I think is free, , do a scan with that program and that should set you up with a trouble free computer as far as the internet and e-mail are concerned... AVG is a crap. I knew I had a virus since I couldn't access Task manager, folder options, registry editor etc., I scanned with it and reported " No threats detected".

Kaspersky did the job.

I recently had the same problem. I ran AVG antivirus and then manually removed the entries from the registry.
You can't rely on one defender especially when you are in the internet, so you must strengthen your security. Some Antivirus program like what you have has doesn't have protection against malware. Just try this my 2 Favorite Anti-Spyware programs from Lavasoft Ad-aware 2007 and Spybot Search %26 Destroy 1.4 and it's free of charge. Next time be a vigilant when you try to download an Active X or any program, 'cause even if you have all the best defender on your computer it is always depends on you.

There are two camps out there. Those that like AVG and those that don't. I personally like it. I'm sure that you will get some responses from the other camp as well. First, AVG is free. It automatically updates itself once a day with the latest virus definitions. And it is easy to use.

There are more than several options about what Virus Scanner to use. The important thing is to use one. So you are on track here.

We have 3 computers in my house, 1 of which we had only used for online games and such, but this computer did not have any anti-virus/anti-spyware software of any kind.
