Does my computer REALLY have a virus?

My laptop is a couple years old, and I thought I had renewed my norton.. apparently not. I keep getting "balloons" in the bottom right hand cornor of the screen saying my computer is infected, and if I try to close it, I get an internet pop-up for some anti-spyware it wants me to buy and download (Always a different brand). I don't know which to get.. or if I should even get one, maybe it's just a fake software that's really a virus itself? I don' t know, I deleted cookies %26 temp files, and it seemed to help for a couple days, now it's back. What is going on?! Please help...

It sounds like you have adware on your computer. Especially since you keep getting advertisements to pop up asking you to buy software that will help you get rid of it.

My recommendation is get Mozilla Firefox if you haven't already. And google AdAware SE Personal, by Lavasoft. It's not like webroot's spysweeper, but does a good job in removing adware from your PC without always running in the background like webroot.

Both AdAware SE Personal, and Firefox are free on the net. They are also very easy to setup. The reason why I mention using Firefox over Internet Explorer is that, it's safer, secure, and you can modd it heavily.
