I upgraded to Vista and later wanted iTunes and I get this message:

"One thing which you can do is to start the PC in safe mode, by repeatedly pressing F8 when on the BIOS startup screen (it will either have a logo of your PC / motherboard manufacturer or a count of how much RAM you have).

When pressing F8, you will be presented with a menu. If you're using Windows XP / 2000, choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" or, with Windows 9x, choose Safe Mode Command Prompt". etc.

I have booted in safe mode, trying both my user and the Administrator. Unfortunately when I run the command rd /s my user\Shared\Films it still crashes. The folder is a limewire folder Shared\Films. The error message I get is "cmd.exe - Application Error The instruction at 0x7c911e58 referenced memory at 0x2157454e. The memory could not be read".

Basically I have a problem with installing I-tunes on my Computer.

I'm using Windows XP and I cannot install I-tunes 7. X on my computer.

When I download it, and click on it. It comes up with an error.

The problem was that, for some reason, the 32-bit version of VBScript.dll wasn鈥檛 registered on your machine. I don鈥檛 know if that鈥檚 by design (a security feature) or a bug in this beta build of Vista. The solution:

Start Menu -%26gt; All Programs -%26gt; Accessories -%26gt; Right Click on Command Prompt -%26gt; Run As Administrator.

Type 鈥渃d C:\Windows\SysWOW64鈥?

Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll

If you don鈥檛 do Run as Administrator, the regsvr32 will fail. Also, be careful to run the command in SysWOW64, not System32! System32 on a 64-bit system actually contains the 64-bit system libraries. The 32-bit versions are in (where else?) SysWOW64. Makes perfect sense, right? (From an engineering standpoint it probably does, but it鈥檚 going to be a source of confusion for a lot of people, no doubt).

You might have dust accumulated on the processor fan which will make your fan work overtime.

Power off your PC and open up you PC case and either use compressed air or a vacuum and clean up the dust in there.

did you try restarting your computer? um, you can always try changing settings on the ipod so that you can view the hidden files on it and you can just directly put the music files into the correct folder...i know how to do this on a macintosh but not on a windows computer...you sound like you know what you are doing w/ computers though, you might be able to figure it out. so yeah, try changing settings that allow you to see the hidden folders on the ipod

If you go the apple site and re-download it, it will give you the choice of repairing the damaged files, or removing iTunes completely so you can re-install.

Download a free version of linux called backtrack2. This comes as an iso so you need a programme to burn it to cd, there are some freeware ones but i use magicISO. boot your computer with the cd in the drive and it will start linux. From there you can start snort, the leading intrusion detection system.

Wait till the hacker (if it is a hacker) strikes. Get his ip and have fun, backtrack comes with ALOT of tools you can use to get your own back.

I was messing around on the computer, going places I shouldn't have been, I guess. I was warned that I needed to run my virus scan and anti-spy to clear it up. The problem is now, in my taskbar, I have an icon I can't get rid of--VirusProtectPro wants me to download it's product, and I have no need for it, because I am well protected without it. Is this a reliable company, or what? I ran a scan with it once, and it told me I was infected, and had to purchase their software to clean it up. I do not need their services, but they won't go away. Any ideas on how to remove it from my taskbar?

These messages you are getting are a form of malware. They are trying to pressure/ trick you into buying from them so they can then profit from you. You could have possibly aquired them through a download (from a p2p network and so on...) or you may have ran a bogus executable. Several other means are possible yet are irrelevant to the situation. In my personal opinion you should purchase a reliable anti-virus/malware program, or an all in one suite (including a firewall). Norton and Mcaffee have done a good job for my computers, and should clear your situation up once installed and runned.
It's very possible that the message was the spyware. Shut down your computer and start it in Safe Mode(by repeatedly pushing F5 RIGHT AFTER booting the computer), and scan for viruses.

Apparently, the Anti-spyware program DELETED something that was run at startup. This is probably nothing that you need. If your computer is running fine, then to to the Start menu and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. You will see that file name in that list. Uncheck it.

Just in case, update your anti-virus program. Then reboot into SAFE mode. (Use F8 during the startup sequence) Then run a full scan while in safe mode.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search %26 Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

First of all, NoAdware is a terrible program to use. CNET reviewed the software and gave it a 1 out of 10 (10 being the best). Second, items detected by anti-spyware programs aren't necessarily spyware. Occasionally, there are false positives - items which are genuinely harmless but labeled as spyware. You will need a better security program than NoAdware. There are three (3) applications that can help and all of them free to download. They are Spybot Search%26Destroy, Lavasoft's Ad Aware and Microsoft's Window Defender beta 2. You can find all these programs at http://www.filehippo.com/software/antisp...

Lastly, you can use Computer Associates' Spyware Encyclopedia to look up a particular spyware. When one of my anti-spyware scanners detects a suspicous file, I look it up in the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia lists all the files added by a particular spyware. If I don't find these files then I conclude that it was a false positive. Another trick is to scan the suspicious file with another anti-spyware scanner. If two scanners come up with the same suspicious file(s) then I am convinced that it is indeed spyware.

I have a windows Vista - 7 months old. I only had the free trial Mc Afee for a month, and i have left it otherwise. I noticed it was going a bit funny, so I downloaded a Kaspergers or whatever it is - another free trial .Then my internet completely stopped. So my internet provider suggested that I delete all anti viral software, and take up their free software.

But... after deletion I still cannot get the internet and i am worried as i have no protection at all now.

As far as I have gathered I do need protection even without the internet (which i do want - it just won't work) - it is corrupting my music files.

I can't access any sites as my internet connection isn't working - so don't give me links please, i assuming that I can't do it from another computer, which is what i am having to use at the moment.

Honestly i do not have a clue, and i don't know how bad it is.

You can't just "delete" the anti-virus programs from your computer. You need to use the "uninstallers". Also, you most certainly do not want to have two anti-virus programs running at the same time. We may be able to fix this but will need some more information; as in, exactly what has been done thus far.

Have you tried Vista's built in network connection diagnostic tool? What if any error messages are you getting? Have you looked in your "Device Manager" to see if your NIC is listed and not showing any errors?

Sounds like there is a website you are going to that is causing your problems as well as the fact that the anti-virus/spyware program you are using is very uneffective.Get some better protection/removal software and quit going to certain websites.

I bet its NORTON isn't it? If its Norton, you need to get rid of it from your registry and use the Norton Removal Tool- a software created especially by Norton themselves to delete their software.

The important thing here is you need to modify the registry. The registry is a very sensitive thing, if you disturb it, you might risk causing permanent damage to your PC, so be careful. Follow the instruction on the website below:

download free program called "Ccleaner" it has the option to remove old "add/remove" programs that are still listed but have been deleted. It does this by altering the registry. I have never had a problem with it.

Not to be a smartass.....but if you can't get onto internet, you have no need for any protection!!

Seriously, I also agree with the choices of spyware given by previous answer. But if you still can't get onto internet, then you need to take it up with your provider. You did as they suggested, and it still isn't working!!
If it came with the computer, go to the place where you bought it, or find the disk that it came with.

I have a desk top and my anti-virus expired. I don't do much surfacing. Just the ones I know for business. I bought a lap HP pavillion just a week ago and had some software like anti-ware and Norton security and some other stuff installed in it. I came home and discovered the diskes were still there in the box but were opened and used/installed on my laptop. Can I still use those diskes on my desktop too? will it work again?

If the software came pre-installed on your new machine then it is most likely is is OEM licensed software. In this case you are NOT allowed to install it on any other machine under the terms of the agreement on the packaging. If the software is retail software (like you would buy off the shelf), and this could be found out by reading the small print on the box, then you CAN install it on another machine, but ONLY if you have first uninstalled the copy on the first machine.

The only case where you can install software on multiple machines is when the license is for a network or multiple installations (and this is unlikely for a boxed product).

All that said, you probably actually can install it on the second machine and get a free year's protection before being forced to renew or upgrade, which you will have to pay for anyway.

I personally would uninstall Norton (because it is a resource hog and crashes your desktop all the time) and install something like AVG (do a google for "avg free"). You can even pay for AVG if you prefer, and get all the support etc, and it is still cheaper than Norton.

Help me CD -ROM of my computer is not working properly?

For the past two weeks, my computer is behaving strangely.Its 3.06Pentium 4 with 256 RAM. but now it processes like Pentium -PII.

I think it could b bcoz of any virus from any software downloaded from internet sites ,as I dont use any Anti virus bcoz it reduces the speed. Later on I used "String" Macaffee to clean it but it could only provide solution for time being after 1 or 2 days problem comes back again.

But cd R/W is troubling me the most.all of a sudden it stops detecting the cds in the drive n shows drive is empty while there is cd in it.when I restore the computer to some back date when it was functioning allright CD drive works well but after 1 or 2 days problem is there again.I also used a Lense cleaner CD to clean the lense nearly 2 weeks back. Is this may b a root cause of all the problems.

As I understand it your CD ROM works sometimes, and doesn't others..You really need to have protection on your unit. Your right it sounds like a bug.. Restore to a point where the CD Rom worked. Then go to www.download.com There is a search bar at the top. Type in :

Then go to www. lavasoft.com and look for AD-Aware SE personal edition..Download it and then update it... These programs are all free..Then run all three programs. The Firewall runs itself.. You might want to get yourself a 512 Ram card or higher too.. You really need more than the 256 you have. You will need to run all three programs at least once a week..The AVG protects constantly. The stupid system insists on virus checking every file I open including ones I have created myself in Microsoft products. I too have had trouble removing Norton products from my pc in the past, and I work in IT for a living, so don't feel bad. Here's a link to help you remove the program. If that doesn't work, your going to have to do a search on Symantec's site for removing it from your pc and registry manually...... which is a very delicate situation. Be careful if you do, since you can render your PC useless if you delete critical info (which means you'd have to reinstall Windows on your hard drive).

The specs on it look alright, though I'd personally do away with Vista Home Basic and put XP Pro on it, and replace McAfee with Kaspersky or something else. Other than that, it looks alright for the price, but if you don't need to take it with you, you could build a desktop PC with very similar specs for much less.

Edit: Ok, since it has to be a Dell, and has to be a laptop, scratch the build the PC suggestion. My suggestion about changing out Home Basic and McAfee still stands, however. If you do this, I'd go with Office 2003 instead of 2007, since 2007 doesn't run on XP if I'm not mistaken, and would be cheaper if it's still available for purchase, and you might be able to go with a single core processor if you don't need the extra power a dual core offers, to shave a bit off of the price.

Wireless Internet? That term really bothers me. The only "wireless internet" that i can think of is satellite. What you are referring to is a wireless network with a shared Internet connection. The only other thing you will need to make that possible is a wireless router that is compatible with your wireless card. A Linksys 802.11g router can be bought for like 20 bucks. All you need to do is configure it with your Internet connection and so that it will be used as a wireless access point for your computer.

probably something like a browser add-on messing with IE like a toolbar or something. go to tools, manage add-ons and try disabling some of them that you might not actually need. If that dont work you may have to reinstall Internet explorer

i've got adware se, scanned with panda software, i have symantec anti virus so i'm pretty sure it's not viruses, spyware, or add ware. how do i cut the junk and speed things up. i've got a gig of ram, i defragged, i cleaned up the disk, what else can i do short of wiping my computer again? the internet still works great. just openin browsers and windows explorer, my mouse, all of it is just slow and laggy.

You probably have too many programs starting up when your computer starts.

If you are running windows xp,

go to start

go to run

type "MSCONFIG"

Go to the "startup" tab

uncheck all the boxes of things that you do not want to start up when windows starts.

restart your computer.

well it sounds like the quick boot is turned off on your settings for the Pentium 4 which you can easily change if you press F12 when booting up

I quickly learned that I may have made a mistake in my recent purchase of an HP laptop. Apparently, most software currently out, like anti-virus programs, do not support 64 bit Vista. I also may not be able to run older programs and most drivers are not 64 bit compatible either.

Should I return the laptop and get one with 32 bit? I wanted this computer to be decent so that in 5 years it is not obsolete. However, I do not want to be limited because my computer is ahead of everyone else.

I'm using Win XP Pro and always connected to the net via cable modem.

Well, since the last 2/3 days I keep getting this file named ALG.exe and some other .exe files, which are increasing my broadband traffic to about 100 MB/Day (my daily usage never used to exceed 1-2 MB).

Since my internet connection is limited to 1GB, I fear this infection will end my connection in 10 days. I have installed all possible antivirus softwares available on planet earth, as well as a truckload of anti-spyware softwares like spybot and adaware etc etc. None of them is able to detect the source of the infection.

Even if i end the app in task manager, it gets to work in 5 seconds. That besides, as many times I delete the alg.exe from the windows directory, it reappears like some magic.

I'm afraid this sounds like a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) Virus. They send 1000s of signals to a website with the intent of crashing the server, worse still, you get the blame for this. Have you tried running msconfig.exe then clicking on Startup. Then unclick alg.exe as it shouldn't be there.

any trail program leaves a HKEY registry on your computer which basically says that you have used this program and can't use it again. when you uninstall it, it leaves the HKEY registry on the computer. to get rid of the HKEY registry go:

then reinstall it and you are up and running again.

I'm pretty sure your Idea won't work, but I would suggest getting some spyware doctor, ad-aware, spybot S%26D, the whole shebang. Install and use these in safe mode. Then, use Avast to schedule a boot scan (which gets the viruses before they can be activated.)

I went to speedtest.net and it went from like 1.3Mbs download speeds to like 190kbs download speeds and I can also notice it when I try to download music on iTunes. I don't know what happend, it just started being slower overnight. any ideas? My upload speed went down too, but not so drastically. I ran my anti-spyware, anti-ad ware and ant-virus software and can't find anything. I think it might have something to do with a java download, but I'm not sure, how can I find out?

if your internet is wireless, make sure that there arnt any signal obstructions, like microwaves, wireless phones, metal walls, things like that. if it is wired, try doing a system restore, it is something where you specify a date where everything was fine, and it will take your computer back to the condition that it was, but if you have important documents, back them up on like a flash drive or something. because a system restore will delete them in order to get back to the previous condition. hope this helps!

Some internet connections are semi-shared. Meaning if your neighbor is also downloading a lot then you suffer. If it continues call your provider and tell them you are gonna switch providers unless you recieve something more like the advertised internet speed.
That's pretty extreme. If you have a firewall turn it off and do the test. If you have more than one spyware/ativirus program turn off the extra ones.

Clear you internet cache and cookies, go to system tools and do a disk cleanup, and if you have a registry fixer run it.

Also it could be your isp, it's hard to tell but I really think you have too much junk running in the backround slowing down your machine.
you didn't mention doing a defrag of your system or a disk cleaning...you can find those things by clicking start, all programs, accessories and then in the dropdown you will see both the defrag and disk clean...once you run those, your speed should pick back up...

I liked Zone Alarm. The only reason why I stopped using it was the XP firewall. Two running in parallel wasn't a good idea. I liked it so much in fact I bought a years subscription on the full product. It wasn't all that much better and I quickly got bored with the extra functionality. I would recommend it. wiping the hardrive would only help if you had a virus you couldn't get rid of. You should install a program like norton or mcaffe that has a firewall(protects you from those hackers) and anti virus. Make sure you update it too.

Wish I had an answer as the exact same thing is happening to me. In my instance it's logging off and loggong on every few minutes. Every so often I will the "...you have been loggged into another machine." Like you I thought my password may have been stolen somehow so I immediately changed my password, but I still experience the same thing. I have 2 computers and am experiencing similar results on both. Haven't tried a new ID yet, and haven't had any luck in finding resources, but am still looking. I have software/hardware firewalls, virus scanners, and all my wireless protocols are encrypted (not with WEP). This is a recent issue that just started out of the blue after yahoo officially moved all of us to the new mail system. Oh, and you gotta love those automated responses from yahoo. If anyone else has run into this and tried other things to try to resolve it or at least narrow it down the info would be helpful.

You can always get your antivirus to scan the download before you open it. But unfortunatly you do need to download it on to your computer. Most viruses do not become active until you open it. So all you need to do is right click on the download and select Scan with (whatever antivirus software you are running)

This will tell you if you have a virus before you infect your whole computer. I hope this helps you

It sounds like you have adware on your computer. Especially since you keep getting advertisements to pop up asking you to buy software that will help you get rid of it.

My recommendation is get Mozilla Firefox if you haven't already. And google AdAware SE Personal, by Lavasoft. It's not like webroot's spysweeper, but does a good job in removing adware from your PC without always running in the background like webroot.

Both AdAware SE Personal, and Firefox are free on the net. They are also very easy to setup. The reason why I mention using Firefox over Internet Explorer is that, it's safer, secure, and you can modd it heavily.

My computer was infected with SOMETHING. Random websites and fake alerts popped up, and so I downloaded a trial of an Anti-Spyware that someone recommended in another question. Scanned the computer, it found a bunch of infected files, those were all deleted. After this the computer is fine, until I plug it back into the internet and click on internet explorer, at which point everything becomes messed up again. There are a bunch of fake warnings about viruses that tell me to download software that actually turns out to be a virus.

I have no idea what to do. I think I've actually found the problem files, but when I try to delete them, it says they're in use by another program. (Ironic, eh?)

At this point in my life, this is the very last thing I need. Does anyone know what to do?

Try this solution, because the trojan is obviously reintroducing itself to your pc. First don't do trials, you want good programs that you can keep. Download Spyware Doctor Starter Edition and SuperAntispyware which are both completely free (no trials). Install then update both programs. Then disable system restore, reboot, then reenable it. This will remove any and all malware in your system restore points. Now take your computer off the internet and do full scans with each program. After the scans have completed, do a complete online scan of your pc from the Trend Micro Housecall website. It will remove any additional malware from your pc. Depending on the exact malware you are infected with you might have to scan your pc with the spyware doctor and superantispyware in safe mode (after reboot hit f8, repeatedly). Also if you don't have a good antivirus software installed I would highly recommednd the use of Antivir which is free and an excellent antivirus program.

If you think Avg is good enough for you, there is no need to purchase a license for another program.

I've been using Norton for about 18 months now and I've had 2 virus infections that Norton wasn't able to get rid off. I don't remember how i got rid of the 1st one, but about 2 month's ago I got some virus that Norton pops a "Virus Alert" for [Backdoor.IRC.Aladinz.R] but can't get rid off. I tried removing the virus following the instructions on their site but nothing!

I'm thinking of just reinstalling windows and deleting everything.

Anyway, Norton subscription already expried a couple of weeks ago and I don't plan to renew it or reinstall it. The anti-virus that came w/ Yahoo! DSL didn't work for anything either, it just give virus warnings/alerts but can't remove...

My recycling bin dont work.?

I run Win XP. I have 8 files in my recycling bin (RB) but they are hidden. so i went into the tools to unhide them and there still didnt show up. ive tried to use "empty the RB" from right clicking and n e other way i can think of. but still it says i have 8 items in there. When i delete a file its gone from my computer but it is not in my RB. Ive ran Virus scans and anti-spam software and nothing comes up. This has been a problem for a while now and its not effecting the performance of my computer. Just a thought, I'm assuming you've enabled show hidden/system files in your view options in Explorer at this point.

Go to your C: drive and open up the folder RECYCLED perhaps you may find them in there, rather than the "default" interface for your RB.

I have Avast! 4 Home Edition. This is my antivirus and it comes with Web Shield which monitors internet activity.

I also have Comodo Firewall. This is well...my firewall.

You have a smitfraud infection. That networm-i.virus@fp isn't real; it's just a name that the people who wrote the *real* trojan made up to try to get you to buy whatever it is that's popping up.

RogueFix should take take of that without a problem, but I would follow the RogueFix up with Superantispyware to get any other malware that may have snuck in.
