Do I still need Norton security software even I have all necessary soft-wares in my computer?

I have windows vista home premium and have all recommended anti virus(Avast free home edition) and anti spyware(windows defender) and microsoft built in firewall.I can see I still have Norton Secuiry software in my install/uninstall list.I really don't know if It's safe to uninstall it from my system as I don't want to pay.Is there any safe way to uninstall it without harming my computer's other features?

Since you're running seperate Antivirus, antispyware, and relying on windows firewall, then you don't in fact need Norton for anything.

In fact, running multiple Antivirus programs simultaneously can have negative effects.

You should be able to uninstall it as you would any other program, but then again norton is notorious for making that process as painful as possible. Try searching for "Norton Removal Tool" on the net, that might help you out. (In fact, it's hosted on Norton's own website)

As a PC repair tech, I urge to be wary of free downloads. There are a lot of good free utilities out there, however a lot of these "free" programs can be bundled with spyware. I have found file hippo to be one of my favorite freeware download sites. Download.com is also good.

Yeah, you can. A file is just a collection of 0s and 1s and you can transfer from Mac to PC, and the file stays the same. The only difference is the platform on which you open the files.

From the PANDA software site that was listed. I found the file back on the computer this am and deleted it again. I can't seem to get a anti-virus program to download all the way. The Panda one that was listed sounds like the best one, just wish I could figure out what is going on with this and whatever else may be slowing my computer down. When I get a pop-up and I close it, it starts to log me off also. When the pop-up blocker is working I then get "pop-unders"

It is not a virus. There are only a couple of viruses for Windows Mobile and none of them has any chances of actually spreading in the wild. So, no, you don't really need an anti-virus program for your device.

Your problem is probably caused by some kind of hardware failure. Take your device to a repair shop.

I think we got some adware or spyware or a virus or something. Our Norton Anti Virus isn't detecting it. We know we have the most current definitions. Pop-ups keep coming up warning us that our security is at risk, etc trying to sell us some spyware removal software or something. Porn pops up with an offer to sell us something to remove it. It put a giant link over the top of our desktop wallpaper. This is really frustrating.

Tried contacting Norton (symantec) and they offered to sell us a technician remotely accessing our computer to remove it for $99. I hope to avoid this option if at all possible.

Any other suggestions?? Please...help! :) How can we find this ourselves and get it off of here?

Download the programs linked below. Install them. Update them. Scan your pc with them, and do so weekly.

If you have System Restore turned on, the Restore files may be infected, and trying to reinfect your pc. I turn off that feature, reboot to delete the files, then turn it on after a full system scan with AVG.

(right-click My Computer, Properties, System Restore tab, check the box to turn off System Restore on all drives.)

Restart your PC, and hold down the F8 key.

A couple of days ago I posted a request of how to get rid of Norton anti virus and internet security that I found pre-installed on my new computer. Thanks for all the useful answers.

Here's what I've done so far:

1. Used the uninstall routine from add/remove programs

2. Downloaded the norton software removal tool and used it

3. Did a file search for norton and symantec and deleted them

4. Searched the registry for Norton and symantec entries and deleted them

5. Ran registry mechanic to clean up afterwards

So did I get rid of all traces of this pernicious software? NO!

I still have the LiveUpdate icon showing in control panel. I can't delete it. If I click on it I get the message " liveupdate can't find some files it needs. To use liveupdate reinstall the application and try again" .

Can anyone help me get rid??

Restart PC, Press F8 while booting, you should get a menu, choose safe mode (alone, not with networking or command prompt), run your scans and let them get rid of the nasties, if the AV still doesn't do it in safe mode and you have taken a note of where they are then browse to them yourself via explorer or my computer and delete them yourself!

Get a decent set of security installed after reboot including a decent firewall. AND BE MORE WARY! Virus's %26 spyware can only install if you tell them to, so you've fell for a trick like click here for a free scan of your pc or something similar.

The easiest way, although not the best way, to boot into safe mode, is to have your computer start loading normally, and while it has the 'Windows XP' startup screen showing, turn the power off. The next time you turn it on, it will boot into safe mode.

Once you're in safe mode, download a good free anti virus to a flash drive, like AVG, or something similar, copy it to your computer, and run it.

If all else fails, find a friend who is good with computers, and ask them to help. Taking it to a computer repair shop is one way to get it fixed, but they will probably charge far more than they should.

I've been having a software counterfeitin' on my menu bar and it's hard to find a way to remove this because the genuine microsoft windows says that I got a software counterfeitin', because of the volume key license. Okay, that's the grey-area version of how to get around the issue, but it's not a fix. It's still not a legal resolution. Eventually, when the asker tries to install another update/service pack/etc..., the same issue will occur. Report It

Most of the best computer experts in the world are women...

If you are formattng a system properly and still find yourself infected .. then most likely whatever you are reinstalling after the format contains the malware.

I suggest you invest in a proper security suite (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) preferably from one reliable vendor (like McAfee Total Protection or Norton 360) and ensure it is properly configured and completely up to date and kept that way.

You should order it this way... format the drive, reinstall windows, install security, update it, install all windows updates.. rebooting as necessary. THEN worry about putting your files back on and surfing the web.

Try Avg from grisoft and it is free
my only advice is system restore. it may be too late. go to start, run, type in "msconfig" then choose the system restore button, and follow the directions. there is also a way to get to system restore through the control panel. the system restore restores your computer to an earlier time. try to restore it to the time before the firus

Your firewall and virus catcher doesn't seem very reliable. If I were you I'd can Norton and get McAfee. Norton got caught creating viruses and spreading them. This is what I heard. Get and down load at least their virus program. My mouse did that before and I found out it was dirty and had lint , a lot in where the ball turns. Check that out first, because I've never heard of a virus attacking a plug and play mouse. Try a different mouse, too. Maybe that'll help. Can't remove a program from "Add and Remove Programs"?

Ok, I have a program called "Advertismen" in Add %26 remove, usually i find programs that are obviously pop-ups. This one is different, smart even. When i choose "change/remove" it says "The system should be restarted to complete uninstall" then with the yes/no option. So I click yes, but when I return to the "Add and Remove Programs" it is still there. So I try to hunt it down, searching C:/ etc. Although it obviously uses different wording/random wording because I can't find "Advertismen". So - I went through all files I decided might be the source, deleting them but no avail. So I tried using anti-spyware, anti-virus and any other free anti software I could get my hands on ... Still there though.

I noticed transmission and receiving on both D-Link and cable modems frequently. Usually I find that McAfee is being updated, and sometime Dell and Microsoft.

The cable company provides spyware filtering, and anti virus checks.

But watching the modems transmit and receive persistently without me doing anything - I need a software or some advice about monitoring what is going on inside my PC and laptop (I have three computers networked to the D-Link wireless router).

Process Explorer is a handy tool that might help. It will show all applications running and what is taking up memory. You can close programs. Anything you don't recognize can be found online by just typing in its name to a search. Maybe your spyware filtering is letting something through. Do you use adaware to check for spy/adware? I've tested spybot, adaware, and windows defender and adaware seemed to be the best but they are all good.

Backup and restore hardware and software for your whole computer?

I use Microsoft XP. I am aware that hardware and software exists (sometimes sold together, sometimes separately) with which I can back up my entire computer -- OS, registries, bookmarks, docs, etc. This interests me because I'd rather not have to restore it program by program from original disks-- first the operating system, then all the applications I run. I have dozens of applications that I use regularly, and it would take days to restore everything and troubleshoot until I have them all working together.

I am very careful with security and have firewalls, spybot stoppers, anti-virus, etc. Still, you never know when it will crash and you have to restore from scratch. I probably need %26gt; 100 GB.

Please tell me what you use and what you like about it. I don't care if it's a little slow; I want something that is fairly seamless and straightforward. I am willing to work awhile with the setup, but after that's established I want the backup and restore to be easy.

I just don't have good experiences with McAfee (it is slow and buggy) but some people like it. Kapersky does not work well (yet) with Vista.

If you get internet through a router, that gives some protection in addition to the firewall. Vista has a firewall for incoming and outgoing traffic (the XP firewall only for incoming).

Be careful with running multiple firewalls or multiple spyware catchers. They can conflict and slow down your system.

A software firewall will have outbound application filtering. It is your last line of defense, if say a trojan somehow gets into your machine and trys to "phone-home" to the attacker.

A software firewall should alert you to this fact that a strange application is attempting to access the internet.

With a dell, there is a hidden system restore partition, so if you do mess it up beyond bootable. You can enter the hidden partition at boot and restore all the original factor settings.

That's a warning that you don't have to put TOO much thought into. What it's saying is that some programs MIGHT share the same files (usually they don't...make that they almost always don't). It will be fine uninstalling it, you won't screw up anything.
I would make sure I have a backup of my system first and then either use Nortons uninstall or add or remove programs. I have uninstalled it and had no problems, and when I was asked about removing files that may be used in other programs I did not delete, my system works fine. Good Luck

Windows has always come with a media player and you can uninstall it if you want.

Pirated software is just that pirated, and therefore not legal....if you have an invalid key or used a key generator to activate a product, its only a matter of time before that activation becomes obsolete and you need to enter a valid key.....its all about the algorhythm and the program is written to look for a certain combination, and if you hacked that or altered it in any way the program will de-activate or uninstall or stop working.

Hi, NORTON, Mcafee and one or two more are just rip off's. There are just as good FREE anti-virus programs avalable. like AVG, and Personal firewall, windows Firewall is just as good as anything, just bear in mind you cannot run two firewalls. so make sure that there is only one running on your system. you can run anti-spyware, trogen killers, malware killers all at the same time if you wish. there are lots of free programs with out going to the expence of buying costly programs that you have to KEEP BUYING every 12 months WHAT A RIP OFF.

Those are registry entries. Unless you know what you are doing don't try to delete them yourself. Download Spybot Search and Destroy. Restart your computer in safe mode. Run the scan and let Spybot delete them for you.

sounds like you downloaded some malware, update your scanners and run them in safe mode.
You need to download a virus scanner off the web, such as WindowsLive One-Care Safety Scanner, it should detect and remove it.
Id use Grisoft AVG 7.5,AD-Aware SE both free on line
Log on from Safe mode and try your updated Anti-Virus from there. Spybot may not help on this at all. We will need to see the safe mode operation to decide what to do next.

try avg its free but it might work and it can be a pain try restarting a few times it might not be a virus
you have to save everything that is in your hard drive , and format it. Then you'll have a fresh start.
Clearly you've infected yourself with malware. Either by downloading all these freeware / crapware programs that give you a false sense of security or because you downloaded ones that were already infected with something or becuase you ignored a warning and downloaded malware despite the warning... in any case...

If you are unable to properly secure your own computer I strongly recommend you take it to a reliable and qualified technician who can sort it out before you muck it up beyond repair (if you aren't there already).

I would strongly urge you to take this time to reevaluate the security choices you are making for your computer and invest in a proper security suite from a reliable vendor that is properly configured and kept up to date.

I am using windows vista business. I have loaded Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic - Guard and also Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personala and PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Even with 2 gigs RAM my laptops considerably slowed down over the past couple of days and though I have scanned it with Avira, I haven't been able to pick up anything. But I also haven't able to update any of the security softwares. The update cancels by itself and error messages begin to pop up.

Am not very good with security related issues for computers so am I bit lost here.

It's not likely to be a problem with your browsers. What you are describing is an inability to connect to certain addresses. They are either down (the wedsite's fault), or they are being blocked. If this is not a home network, then it may be blocked outside of your control. If you use a home network (I'm using "Network" loosely), the blocking is likely to be due to a firewall configuration.

If you already have it, its your computer that infected because you almost never get popups with mozilla. I would try this switch and those annoying ads should go away :) I doubt its your computer, Internet Explorer sucks.

Best free anti-spyware are Ad-aware Se Personal (find.pcworld.com/51644) and Spy Bot-Search and Destroy (find.pcworld.com/51646). Anti-virus softwares are AVG Anti-virus (find.pcworld.com/51642) and Avast 4 Home Edition (find.pcworld.com/51640). Registry cleaner is Microsoft Reg Cleaner but i don't know download link.

If you're infected, you may need more than one spyware package to clean your machine. Try http://www.lavasoft.com/. Spybot and Ad-aware should get rid of most, if not all, of your spyware problems.
