Problems with desktop icons - click one and they all try to open !!?

Hi - a problem for the computer buffs out there. Just recently, when I try to click on a desktop icon a few others will also try to open. When I try to click another icon a warning comes up saying I am trying to open up "x" number of icons and this will slow down my computer. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 Home version and regularly run my anti-virus and anti-spyware software which always comes up as zero infections. A firewall is also installed and working ok which seems (??) to rule out some kind of infection.

Just recently, though, I've started to hibernate the computer instead of a total shutdown but I do a re-boot at least once a week to clear everything etc.

Could this be the cause of the problem or is my machine infected with something after all ?

This said, the problem is cured by shutting the computer down each time I finish with it.

So is hibernating the computer all it's cracked up to be.

Thanks for watching and any advice would be appreciated !!!!

Is it possible that one of your shift buttons is getting jammed? Causing you to select multiple icons instead of just one

Although the shift buttons are not causing the problem thanks for taking the time to answer !! I suppose I'll have to kick the hibernate mode into touch and go back to start-up and shut-down again !!! Report It
