any points to be wary of. For instance, is there any anti-virus or anti-spam software that will not run with Firefox.

You can have both IE and Firefox on the same computer, in fact I recommend you just leave IE to rot in a corner of your computer. Some programs are written to work with IE only - Norton and others like it.
If you go into add / remove programs and then add / remove windows components, and choose to "remove" IE it just removes the file associations, not IE.
On the positive side, you'll need your antivirus and antispyware programs much less - Firefox doesn't let in what IE does!
Just switch your preference to Firefox ("default browser") and you won't even notice IE's on your computer anymore.
Oh, and make sure you have a firewall like Zonealarm to keep people out, and keep programs from connecting to the net (saves bandwidth).

naah don't be scared. I personally have gotten fond of IE7, but firefox is a great program too!
Not a thing to be wary of, I have used Firefox since it first came out. However, there are some site such as Windows Update that still require IE
