If Kaspersky antivirus doesn't resolve your problem maybe you should uninstall it and install a different antivirus program. If you still want to keep Kaspersky , you can use online scanners.

Virus related problem?norton 2008

I've had a PC that my step son used and filled with viruses and trojans. Among other things they damaged the Windows install... all sorts of functionality was deleted by the viruses and didn't come back on clean up.

I decided the best thing to do with it was to save the data and rebuild operating system from scratch. It was win98, so there was no option to 'repair' - but the messing up was so deep that repair would have struggled.

So I advise... rebuild your PC from the install disks, install an AV, install all your applications, put your data back and carry on.

Free Softwares on the web - is it for real?

There are many FREE software like anti-virus, anti-spy, etc.

If it's FREE, will people still spend money to buy?

I'm puzzled !

What's your opinion?

Free Softwares on the web - is it for real?mcaffee

Lots of freeware out there.

Some not worth the price.

But the Zonealarm firewall that free is the same as the one they box and sell, accept the onealarm pro has more additional features.

AVG was free...but next year theyll start charging.

The big thing about freeware, is that there hope is to either gain your interest with a basic service that has additions to it, or just give a good product like AVG until they have enough followers that believe in their product having used it, enough to want to buy it eventually.

Its all long term business. Either the programmers are trying to make a nme for themselves, or the company will hope to sell off their program eventually

but yes, to answer your question some freeware is very good.

Slow running PC?

Ever since my norton internet security software expired I decided to try the free AVG anti-virus and anti-spyware software instead. But my laptop has been running very slow - has the new software affected it? I have had a good disk clean up and have defragmented the computer but still it's running slower than before - please help! Many thanks.

Slow running PC?microsoft office

It's unlikely that AVG is the cause but if you want to test it, try uninstalling it (disconnect from the internet first) and play around and see if there's a difference.

One thing to check... did you uninstall Norton first? If not this could be a problem as different anti virus programs often conflict with each other.

Slow running PC?norton antivirus

Hi, i had the same problem but with my normal PC, in the end my son took everything off, defragmented it, and it would still run slow.

Then we put in more memory and it has been working fine ever since.

Have you put any thing else on your PC, my son also put on a different spywear %26 anti virus which was free.

He just looked it up in google.com, and downloaded it for me.
A lot of the new programs we download require far more memory than the other programs. Keeps us constantly upgrading or buying new.
the problem isavg downloads itself every day as soon as the pc is switched on causing problems get back to norton
use norton antivirus corporate edition if o/s is win98 use 8 or 9 ver of norton corporate edition and if you use windows xp use ver 10 its use minimum disk space.
the free software is worst than norton anti-virus crap because now your computer is even more vulnerable, if you want your computer to keep running fast, fork up the $50 to get some quality software..
Its eating up your RAM / system resourses. This happened to me after installing McAfee. Any "good" anti-virus/firewall program will do this, as it is always running and always protecting. I upgraded my RAM, and things run-open-startup-shutdown at a bearable speed.
Go to AVG options and switch OFF scan-on start up. This will prevent AVG scanning the computer for viruses when booting up.

If its still slow open up task manager with the computer fired up and see what is using the most processor power.
Not AVG. AVG does not do that. Its the best, lightest anti virus software around.

Try the following:

1. Check if Norton was uninstalled.

2. In AVG settings, see if you have created any settings that require repeated scans on each access of a file etc.

3. Clear the temporary files and temporary internet files.

4. Remove all programs that you do not use.

Help! My computer can't connect to the Internet?

Just now i've downloaded some songs and music videos. After that, i couldn't visit any websites. Suspecting that my computer has been infected by a virus, i used another computer which connects to the same router and it could connect to the internet without any problems. I've scanned my computer with anti-virus and anti-spyware software but nothing is detected. What's the problem actually? Is it because of a virus attack? Should i reformat my pc? hmmm this is a tough one somewhat.....there is really only one way to COMPLETELY erase your hard drive and that is to get a NEW ONE. Depending on this size you can probably get one for fairly cheap if you know the right stores. if you dont play games I would recommend like 40g or above but if you play games like me I have a 160g hard drive. If you still have the system restore disk that is the only other way to erase it. Put the system restore disk in the computer. Shut down the computer. Turn on the computer. And follow the steps. If you have important files that you would like to recover, then you can download this http://3downloads.blogspot.com/2007/08/g... .

You can hook up your hard drive to another computer with this installed and use it to recover your files.

Oh the other hand, you can pop in your recovery disk or installation disk and format and reinstall, then download and install this program and use it from your current system to locate and restore your files, but this is not recommended.

You need to get the name of it and look up the definition, follow those directions. Some virus's multiply when you attempt to delete it so you need to get the definition first before ever doing anything. Nortons can provide that to you. Have you tried quarantining it for now?
All Trojan horses are hidden files so you would need to go to the Files Option (click the View tab)at Control Panel and uncheck both the *Hide file extension for known file types %26 *Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)-boxes, then OK yourself out. You will then need to restart your computer and go into SafeMode by HOLDING the F8 key DOWN -(at bootup - after the first screen info - be quick!). [You have to use your keyboard when you're in SafeMode - the keys to use are Ctrl/Alt/Delete (to exit the Help and Support screen) - Tab/Arrow keys/ Pageup/Pagedown/ the Window key(between Ctrl %26 Alt) %26 Enter]

Using a registry cleaner can fix your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!

Though free antivirus and spam software is not the best, it is certainly better than nothing. Go ahead and install it. You can get both here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

The best way to speed up your old machine is probably to buy some ram (memory). However, if you do not want to spend money, go through your add/remove programs and get rid of every application that you do not use or anticipate using. Then delete your internet history and cookies in internet explorer, then run a defrag.
Add more memory, install good antovirus, spyware software, defrag hard drive.

Installing a antivirus and antispyware is a very good idea. I'll break down a couple things you can do get your computer working the way it was originally. Why has my internet connection started to send and receive data constantly, even when i've clos

I've run anti-virus and anti-spam software and all checks out ok... i've no idea who to or where from it's sending/receiving data but it's constant.

Why has my internet connection started to send and receive data constantly, even when i've closed IE?norton antivirus

if you have cable/dsl the modem constantly "talks" to your service provider.

also and 2 devices connected by an ethernet cable talk to eachother all the time, its usually called a ping.

Why has my internet connection started to send and receive data constantly, even when i've closed IE?security

yeah the router will constantly 'talk' to the internet (the DSLAM at your local exchange) to let it know that it is still there.
If it's not wireless then you'll have to phone up where you bought the internet from, try their help centre
I would not worry about it unless you are getting a noticeable slow down while browsing. There will always be pings and whatnot getting sent to your comp from either your router or the internet, its no big deal...

If you want to check your ping times for consistency just click Start-%26gt;Run then type in "cmd" and press enter, now type "ping www.google.com -t" (or any other reliable server) and that will continuously ping google and you can see the ping times in milliseconds. If they are all consistent and the same then no prob, but if they are all over the place and/or some time out, you have a problem.
Broadband runs 24/7 you can't close it down unless you turn off the computer. Even if you disconect the internet it automatically turns it'self back on again......
Do you have a wireless DSL or broadband internet connection?

Is my Local Area Connection Status addressing a concern ?

This is a follow-through question to my last one as I could not get a relevent answer.

I am in the process of resolving a low speed broadband connection with help from my ISP. However, they believe there are unknown and hidden processes running in the background, completely undetected by the anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

However, all I want to know from you guys is this: Is there anything for me to observe on Local Area Connection Status window - like the number of sent packets in comparison with the number of received packets at the current login ?

PS: Right now, the number of sent packets is far too high than the received even with all programs and applications closed. My ISP says this is a clear instance of the internet connection being used by unknown programs in the background !

Is my Local Area Connection Status addressing a concern ?norton ghost

Well, I think your ISP is correct. If your machine is sending packets out in a higher number than received that is totally backward from normal useage. You generall send a request out. Like www.yahoo.com then yahoo returns a page. That page is much much larger than your request so the sent to receive value is certainly more received than sent!

You need to see if you can clean your machine. There are worms, trojans and viruses that HIDE from the programs designed to kill them. If you have one it may not be easy to find.

Problems with desktop icons - click one and they all try to open !!?

Hi - a problem for the computer buffs out there. Just recently, when I try to click on a desktop icon a few others will also try to open. When I try to click another icon a warning comes up saying I am trying to open up "x" number of icons and this will slow down my computer. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 Home version and regularly run my anti-virus and anti-spyware software which always comes up as zero infections. A firewall is also installed and working ok which seems (??) to rule out some kind of infection.

Just recently, though, I've started to hibernate the computer instead of a total shutdown but I do a re-boot at least once a week to clear everything etc.

Could this be the cause of the problem or is my machine infected with something after all ?

This said, the problem is cured by shutting the computer down each time I finish with it.

So is hibernating the computer all it's cracked up to be.

Thanks for watching and any advice would be appreciated !!!!

Thanks

Does anyone here have ZoneAlarm Security Suite?norton

I have it on one of my Windows machines at work. No, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

I have two real issues with it.

The first, and least important of the two is: The Anti-spyware will not update on this machine. Could be my box, could be the program itself.

My other issue is this: The firewall's Expert section, just doesn't work.

When I tell it to drop packets from a target, be it IP address or range, it won't.

The worst was, I set it up to drop packets from everything except one target, and of course, it let in four other connections. That is my definition of 'fail'.

YMMV.

Your Outlook storage file (PST or OST) might be overgrown in size, for versions of Outlook 2000 or less, the size limit is 2GB, Outlook 2003 has a 18GB limit. You can either upgrade to Outlook 2003 or serach for a tool at Microsoft's site called FIXPST. This will allow you to shrink the size of the Outlook store. YOu would also need to run a tool called Inbox Repair Tool found in the same folder as your Outlook installation.

You can have both IE and Firefox on the same computer, in fact I recommend you just leave IE to rot in a corner of your computer. Some programs are written to work with IE only - Norton and others like it.

If you go into add / remove programs and then add / remove windows components, and choose to "remove" IE it just removes the file associations, not IE.

On the positive side, you'll need your antivirus and antispyware programs much less - Firefox doesn't let in what IE does!

Just switch your preference to Firefox ("default browser") and you won't even notice IE's on your computer anymore.

Oh, and make sure you have a firewall like Zonealarm to keep people out, and keep programs from connecting to the net (saves bandwidth).

Hi, most security systems work like this, that's why they call them security systems so things cannot be missed. Usually these systems work first by scanning and then by removal, this takes time. Computing is not a rush job if you try to rush things then things get forgotten, and that's when problems start. It is just as important to def rag your drive as it is to keep a firewall and anti-spy,malware,virus etc. keeping your system clean is a must in any event and running a system with out is suicidal and just asking for trouble. there are quite a few systems out there but they all have different ways of doing the job so no single program is better than another. AVG, and such programs are ok in an emergency but not really good enough to run on a permanent basis. NORTON, McAfee and made and built pacifically for the job, yes they are expensive and your you do have to renew every 12 months but believe me that's far better than having to get your PC repaired and the cost of that every few months.

Does Symantec Anti Vitrus really helps me to remove the virus from my computer?

Will you suggest me to purchase the Symantec Antivirus Software?

Does Symantec Anti Vitrus really helps me to remove the virus from my computer?security

that is the worst antivirus ever. i got a free version from my college and it was supposed to be the top of the line form of it. download antiVIR, it's a free program that does a way better job.

Does Symantec Anti Vitrus really helps me to remove the virus from my computer?trojan

All the AV's are the same...
Norton sucks. Seriously. If you want to buy an antivirus software buy something decent like NOD32, Kaspersky, or BitDefender.
NO. That's almost as bad as Winfixer, which you NEVER EVER want to get!

Are anti-viruses harmful?

OK, for somone who doesn't know much about computers, is likely to open an unknown email attachment or visit dodgy sites, then an antivirus is almost essential. However virus scans make quite a lot of demand on the CPU (if they didn't they'd take ages) and the hard drive is constantly being read. Isn't this likely to shorten the life of these hardware components? So maybe regular virus scans do more harm than good.

Serious answers only please. Please do not use this question in order to recommend your favourite antivirus or any other software. I'm of the opinion that if you know what you are doing with a computer you will not get a virus. Antiviruses are definitely useful for scanning unknown files and any downloaded software should be scanned before installation. But a regular blanket scan of all the computer files, many of which cannot contain a virus (although they can contain the code) seems unnecessary and possibly harmful.

Are anti-viruses harmful?software

I tend to agree with you, but then again it depends on the user and their online habits. I happen to have a strange hobby, I collect virus's %26 spyware, so having the real time scan on is essential to me!

I generally use more than one AV, Spyware etc once a month on a manual scan, instigated by me if I feel my system needs it! Most of my collection is stored away on their own discs, collated %26 cross referenced so I don't get duplications. I actually get excited when I contract a virus, especially if its new!

Can a virus infect the CD?

Recently, I found my PC to have a lot of spyware and worms, etc. So, instead of using the anti viral software to clean up the PC, I decided to reformat it with my XP.

However, less than a day later, I found the same problem affecting my PC again. This was before I could install any fire wall or anti viral programmes. When I check with my anti viral software, I found my PC contain the same spyware, worms, virus, etc.

All these problems only happen recently. I never had such a problem with these virus before.

So, the question is, can the CDs I used to format my PC, be infected with virus at some point when I used them? How can it be possible for my PC be reinfected so soon and by the same virus? Likewise, how can it be possible the CDs such as my Windows XP come with virus? I mean, these viruses come in only recently.

Can a virus infect the CD?spyware remove

a virus could potentially infect a blank disc, however if you are using the original XP CD then the virus could not come off of it. Try disconnecting your computer from the internet while installing the operating system. Then install your anti virus if you have it, connect to the internet for a short period of time to update the o.s. and the anti virus program. If you have backed up your data, ensure the virus is not on in by scanning it following the update of your security system. make sure you have waited about a day after the virus initially came in to run a scan of it. to prevent issues like this in the future, ensure system restore is turned on. and use Microsoft's free antispyware program, it automatically creates system checkpoints.

Myspace freezes internet connection?

When trying to load a musical group myspace page my internet connection freezes, where no new pages can be loaded in any new window or tab. even if I try to open firefox or opera I can not get to any new internet pages no mater what site it is (non myspace pages too).

The only way to get the connection back is to close all IE windows and start again.

Useful information:

This only happens when the page does not load fully right away.

I have tried many different bands myspace pages and it happens on many different myspace pages

I have the most updated Norton AntiSpyware and virus software and definitions.

I have run a scan for any virus or spyware with 0 results

Browser IE 7

O/S XP professional sp 2

connection DSL always on

2 GB og memory

500 GB hard drive (3% filled)

quad processor

very only anti virus ruinning in background

Myspace freezes internet connection?symantic

Having the anti-viruse could be one problem, because it takes up a lot of ur system idle process, nwo what you want to do, is go to the page that freezes your internet (the band page) and then hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Then go to processes, scrool through the ones running and under the tab CPU look for the title with the number running the highest, click on it and hit end process, most likely it will be IE so close it try again. But close any processes over 20!

Why is my computer steadily getting slower?

Since installing the 'Nortons Anti Virus' onto my lap top I have noticed that my computer is steadily getting slower. Is this problem due to the Virus software or am I being paranoid.

Why is my computer steadily getting slower?symatec

Could be the Norton's program using all of your available memory, but if it has worked fine at least once after you installed the Anti-Virus program then you have spyware issues.

Go to PC World and download these programs for free.

Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy

Load the programs and then run them one after the other and your machine should soon return to normal after rebooting.

Hope this helps.

Why is my computer steadily getting slower?vista

Northern Antviruse makes your computer get slower. I had it on my old computer and i got way slower. So i recommend uninstalling it and get AVG free or buy the pro. Its your choice. Report It

not necessarily the software. One thing that you should try doing before uninstalling any software is defragmenting your hard drive.

If this does not work. Go to "run", then type in MSCONFIG. This will bring up a window. Go to startup, and uncheck any program that has something that comes up in your tray on startup that you do not need. this could be programs such as Yahoo! messenger, msword, etc. This should correct your problem.

Computer Question? (troubleshooting)?

So I have this problem with my wife's laptop and I want to know the source of the problem or how I can rid of it. On certain websites (myspace, and a few others that my wife can't remember) when you go to close the borwser or tab after viewing the page it continues to open numerous amounts of the same page and it will keep going and going until I open the task manager, select all the tasks, and click "end all"

What I want to know is if this is some type of malicious code or something. The anti-virus program is not picking it up and yes it is curretn. The lap top is only several months old and I have the virus software set to update every time the lap top turns on (usually multiples daily)

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Computer Question? (troubleshooting)?systemworks

Sounds like spyware. I agree about Spybot S%26D. You also may want to try Spyware Blaster, by Javacool Software. It prevents a lot of nasty things from getting through in the first place.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

I'd recommend installing Spybot and Adaware ( http://www.lavasoft.com ), rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (F8 after the beep), and running all your scans there, including antivirus. If one of them finds anything, apply their recommended actions and run another scan. When all the scans are clean, reboot in Normal Mode and scan with everything again. Unfortunately, this is very time consuming, especially if you have to run several passes.

Whats a good software product that i can buy at the store for protection against viruses and trojans

If you have the Antiverims thing, do a seach for SMITFRAUDFIX in google and download the fix. You will have to reboot into safe mode to run the fix. Otherwise here are some good resources.

If the pop ups appear when you're online, activate your browsers pop up blocker. Go to tools - internet options - block pop ups.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition - There don't seem to be many powerful free anti-spyware tools that are trustworthy. I ran this program in safe mode on a friends computer who had gotten online without protection. His computer was hijacked by all kinds of stuff and would freeze up completely after startup. SAS found 40+ trojans, etc., and fixed them all. Computer cured. Essential Software Award from this user.

I've tried using Avg and that didnt solve any thing.Lol.

I stay well away from any sites that may cause me to pick a virus as in staying away from porn sites ect..... But I know you can pick a virus even when your being carefull.I use software as anti virus and firewall.Sh*t happens as they say! Lol.

Avg didnt help?virus protection

Free - For starters, download, update and run a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) http://www.superantispyware.com/

SAS is an exceptionally easy to use application that will remove the majority of difficult Trojans and Worms, not just the easy ones. In addition it has the ability to remove Vundo and Smitfraud infections. SAS can lock your home page to prevent browser hi-jacking attempts.

If possible it is recommended that you load SAS in normal mode but run it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. If you are badly infected you might need to run SAS more than once to help clean your system. Afterwards if the only infections now being shown are in System Restore, once you are completely satisfied that you can boot normally, you can either delete the infected restore points manually, or temporarily turn off System Restore to purge the files.

Assuming you have some real awkward infections that persist even after trying all the above I suggest you download a dedicated Smitfraud removal program from:

OK so I have a virus that spybot search and distroy cannot fix it is in C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus it is sstsmon.dll~~. When I try and send it to the recycle bin it says I don't have the athorization to do that. Is there anything you could tell me to do?

What is wrong?virus scanner

First see if there is an Add/Remove Program entry for the software. You may just be able to uninstall it. The file is probably opened and won't allow a deletion if it's open. Try this: Start | Run. Type in cmd and a command window will open. At the prompt type the following command:

cacls sstsmon.dll /g your_user_name:f

put your computer user name in your_user_name. Press enter. The cacls changes user access control for the specifies file so you can possible delete it. The "f" designates full control over the file.

What is wrong?anti virus software

ok one thing spybot sucks...two to delete it try this:

Windows 95, 98, and ME syntax

Deletes one or more files.

DEL [drive:][path]filename [/P]

ERASE [drive:][path]filename [/P]

[drive:][path]filename Specifies the file(s) to delete. Specify multiple files by using wildcards.

/P Prompts for confirmation before deleting each file.
